Leading in Complexity

a coach-led workshop

The world is increasingly complex and successful leaders at all levels work from a new playbook.

If multiple stakeholders, shifting goals and tight resources are frustrating your efforts to achieve your outcomes-welcome to complexity.

A complex system has the following characteristics:

  • it involves large numbers of interacting elements.

  • interactions are nonlinear

  • minor changes can produce disproportionately major consequences.

  • the system is dynamic

  • the whole is greater than the sum of its parts

  • solutions can’t be imposed; rather, they arise from the circumstances.

We cannot forecast or predict what will happen in a complex system.

Consider a new playbook because navigating a complex system requires new skills and new approaches.

Jennifer Garvey Berger’s book, Unlocking Leadership Mindtraps is a great place to start. Her book provides us with a great road map. Dr. Berger outlines five behaviors that must be changed in the face of complexity:

  • Trapped by Simple Stories

  • Trapped by Rightness

  • Trapped by Agreement

  • Trapped by Control

  • Trapped by Ego

The workshop offers deep exploration, robust discussions, support, and room to experiment and try out new perspectives.
