Effort Balancing

A tool to visualize which (if any) parts of your life you want to pay more attention

The 8 sections of this circle represent different facets of your life. Take a few minutes and assign a label to each section, defining those things that are important to you (e.g., wife/husband/partner, family, finances, career, recreation, exercise, school, etc.)

Now imagine that the center of the circle is 0 and the outside perimeter is a 10. Rate each section 0 to 10, with 10 being entirely satisfied and 0 not satisfied at all. How does your wheel look? Are there some areas in which you are unsatisfied?

The Wheel of Life tool can help you visualize which parts of your life need your attention. A coach can help you understand what you should focus on and help you make changes to bring your life into balance.

This can also be a great tool to use with a direct report who is struggling to balance their job duties. Instead of assigning each section a life value, ask your employee to assign each section an important component of their responsibilities (e.g., managing project deadlines, staying up to date on trends, delivering reports for executive leadership, professional development). The employee should then go through the same process of rating each section, keeping in mind how much time they dedicate to each. The resulting visual is a great lead in to a conversation helping the employee prioritize tasks, allocate time more effectively, or make decisions about taking on or dropping tasks.
